Sailing Directions Commonplace Book.

This Commonplace Book appears to have been used by two individuals who may have been related, each writing from different directions towards the center of the book. The front portion of the book, the largest of the two sections, provides a listing of locations for which sailing directions and topics of interest related to sailing have been copied from a variety of sources. Directions are provided for sailing into Boston Harbor; navigating towards Tristan Da Cunha; descriptions of Inner Passage from China; harbors of shelter along the coast of China; specific ship voyages; discussion of the search for "La Peyrouse," the French circumnavigator etc. Illustrations and newspaper clippings are included in this section of the book. The second author has copied items related to the sea; procedures and colors for dyeing; raising hemp, etc. A stamp has been used on the first page of the second section displaying the name "Harriet Crowninshield" several times.
